Gnosall Walks

Norbury Junction and Shelmore Wood

Distance: 2.5 miles Time: 1 hour approx

Start: The car park of the Junction Inn, Norbury

From the pub car park, turn right over the canal bridge to walk along the lane, passing some cottages as you go. After a short while you will pass by a large house on your right with a swimming pool alongside and normally a lot of cars parked in front of it.

As the road swings right to go underneath the canal, carry on straight ahead to walk up the public bridleway leading to Shelmore Fisheries. Where the track swings right to go towards the fishing lake, continue straight ahead.

Walk along this very attractive path, which despite being uneven and muddy in places affords attractive views of open countryside to your left, and woodland to your right. This is Shelmore Wood. As you walk you will see on your left further pools, and then a plantation of fir trees. Keep along this path until it joins a tarmac lane which leads off to Norbury Park Farm to your left. Do not go to the farm but instead keep ahead on the lane with the woods to your right, until it joins the Gnosall to Norbury road next to a pretty country cottage.

Turn right along the lane to walk between woodland to the short road tunnel underneath the Shropshire Union Canal. Take care walking through the tunnel as oncoming traffic cannot see you easily.

Once through the tunnel, immediately climb the steps to your left to emerge onto the towpath of the canal. Turn left along the towpath to walk the three quarters of a mile or so back to the Junction Inn.
